Forrester Research has recently noted in a report that more small enterprise are turning to software as a service (SaaS) for their IT security needs. In the Forester report, it has been suggested that SaaS could become a mainstream method to security because of improved user capabilities and increased browser-based attacks. Because of such services as distributed denial of service (DDoS) protection, vulnerability scanning, end-point security, and identity and log management, the analyst firm Forrester forecasts that SaaS will be a fundamental factor in the growth of SaaS.
The move to cloud is projected grow due to the IT security benefits and is now more of a priority for small enterprise. The report that indicated that "56 per cent of IT decision-makers reporting security as a high or critical priority." As well, "67 per cent of survey respondents reported that "their ability to organize their own IT security was constrained by a shortage of IT staff," which is a main reason why the smaller enterprise are shifting to cloud services for support. The report also noted that outsourcing is even more essential to small enterprise as there is "a growing disparity between hacker abilities and the security defenses accessible to smaller enterprise on a smaller budget."
Outsourcing to the cloud allows small enterprise to benefit from the latest innovative security developments. Smaller businesses now need more security but lack the personnel and resources to deliver it. Specialized expertise in SaaS security services is resulting in small enterprise moving past the conventional security service providers so that they can benefit from the latest comprehensive security technologies that the cloud services provide. The Forester report notes that "35% of the IT decision-makers surveyed said they used a security service provider not named in the survey which shows the heterogeneity of SaaS IT security."
The Forester report also revealed that according to IT security professionals, data security is still a high priority due to the continued number of incidents of immense data leaks as well as the high profile news coverage of the actions of Wiki leaks. The Forester report authors note in the report that application security is an area that has not received the right amount of investment and there needs to be a higher priority placed on application security by IT security professionals. The Forester report illustrates that small businesses are realizing the benefits of cloud security technology which is another reason why the 'cloud' is now dominating the web hosting industry.
